I’m not saying that these are the only problems with our IT security. What I am saying is that the hacking bots everyone’s freaking out about didn’t appear out of nowhere. If you have just a little object permanence, you can see that they are the terminal stage of a pathology that governments have only ever worsened: by hoarding and weaponizing vulnerabilities; by paying others to hoard and weaponize vulnerabilities; by criminalizing security audits; by insisting that every computer we rely on be equipped with deliberate vulnerabilities in software we can’t inspect, terminate or delete.
